You wouldn’t think that a 21 year old male would have anything to do with a show like Gossip Girl. The show is after all made mostly for teenage girls. Well in the case of this review, you are going to get the opinion of a 21 year old male. I didn’t give the first season of Gossip Girl much of a chance and ended up having to get caught up on DVD. Season two I actually stayed caught up with the series. While I still think the show is considerably overrated, Gossip Girl is a very solid show.
For those of you who have never watched Gossip Girl before I am going to refer you to my review of the first season of Gossip Girl. If you haven’t watched the first season I would recommend you watch it before jumping into the second season. You will miss too much character development jumping right into the second season without watching the first season.
As far as the second season is concerned I think it was on par with the first season. The second season was quite a bit of hit and miss. When the show was hitting, it was a very good season. Most of Gossip Girl’s best episodes were this season. Then came the misses. This season had a serious problem of not having an overarching storyline. The show tended to jump around randomly at points in the season. At some points storylines would be brought in and then almost out of thin air ended without any further development. If these problems weren’t persistent last season, the second season would have easily been better than the first season. With the problems in place, the second season is on par with the first season.
Overall the special features are decent. You can’t really complain about the quantity but you can possibly complain about the quality. I am not a huge Gossip Girl fan but I found most of the special features to be quite boring. Here is what you can expect from the special features on the dvd set:
- 5th Avenue Meets Gossip Girl-A 1-5 minute look at each of the various locales and sets used during the season. Overall not bad feature as you learn how Gossip Girl uses mostly real locales instead of sets.
- Faces Behind the Design-Around a 20 minute look at the fashion and art of Gossip Girl. Not being much of a fan of either, I can’t say I really cared for this special feature. If you are a fan of fashion or art you should get more enjoyment out of this feature.
- Unaired Scenes-Your typical deleted scenes. Deleted scenes are included in twelve of the 25 episodes.
- Chasing Dorota Webisodes-A series of webisodes that aired online during the season that featured Dorota (Blair’s maid). I didn’t think much of them.
- Gag Reel-Your typical gag reel which unexpectadely is around 10 minutes long.
- Downloadable Audiobook-You can download an mp3 of the Gossip Girl book, “You Know You Love Me”.
- Preview of I Will Always Love You-You receive a booklet of what appears to be the first chapter of the upcoming Gossip Girl book “I Will Always Love You.”
- Jenny’s Fashion Video-A music video featuring Jenny’s clothing line.
Huge fans of the series should enjoy the special features but casual fans would probably be better off passing on the special features since they aren’t that great in my opinion. If you are basing a purchase on the special features, I would probably pass on purchasing the second season.
Overall Gossip Girl is a pretty good show. I personally think it is overrated but still worth watching. While the second season was on and off, I would recommend those that enjoyed the first season to pick up the second season. Fans of the series probably don’t need to be told this but they should pick up the second season on August 18th, 2009.
