Not being one of the people that subscribe to Showtime, I am not able to see shows like Dexter live. Like so many other people I wait until the DVD (and now Blu-Rays) sets come out in order to get caught up on their wonderful shows. While I only recently watched the first two seasons, Dexter is one of those shows that make you really wish that you would subscribe to Showtime. A lot of people have seen the show on DVD but now they have the option to see it in HD with the first season of Dexter being released on Blu-Ray. So is owning Dexter on Blu-Ray worth the price? Find out after the break.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Dexter the easiest way to describe it is that the main character is a serial killer. If you haven’t seen the show you are probably wondering how a show about a serial killer could be good. Well it mostly is that in Dexter, even though he is a killer he at least has the decency to kill the scum of the Earth who should be spending their lives in prison anyway. When Dexter is not in his killer mood he works for the Miami police department helping solve murders and find other serial killers (in season one the serial killer is the Ice Truck Killer).

What really works for Dexter is that it does something no other shows on television are willing to do. The show takes chances. Who thought a show where the main character was a serial killer would be any good? Well it is mostly because despite being a serial killer you actually feel a little sorry for Dexter. Combine that with some good acting and you have a good (although a tad overrated) show.

As you can probably tell just by the box art and the subject material, Dexter is not for the children. It is also not for those who are really squimish about blood, hate swearing, and pretty much everything that you would expect out of adult content on Showtime. Dexter is an adult show that should only be enjoyed by adults.

Dexter fans are probably thinking, “When in the world is he actually going to get to what the Blu-Ray version offers?” Well your waiting is over and you might be a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, Dexter looks amazing on Blu-Ray and you can deffinently notice the difference. The problem is that besides the video quality you get absolutely nothing else new in this Blu-Ray set. You get the same special features and they aren’t even in HD. I think they could have at least put the special features in HD since purchasers of this set would like to see everything in HD.

With everything considered, my recommendations for this set are pretty complicated. We’ll begin with people who have never seen the show. If you don’t mind a little violence and other adult content, I would definently recommend you either pick up the Blu-Ray or DVD version. For those of you who have already seen the show (and most likely own the dvd set) your decision comes down to how important video quality is for you. The show does look much better in Blu-Ray but you are going to have to decide if the extra cash is worth the upgrade in video quality.
