Missed the episode. You can see it in it’s entirety here: Amazon.com
Let’s just get this out of the way right off the bat. While there are a lot of people that loved the first season of Damages, I wouldn’t consider myself one of them. The problem I had with the first season is that the show was way too slow and really needed to pick up the pace. So what that said I was hoping that the second season would pick things up. Well it simply didn’t.
Now some people will say that I just hate Damages and I don’t give it a chance. I have given the show a chance and I think it is only an average show. The show is just too slow. I don’t mind if a show is slow paced as long as it has some great storylines. Damages has never had these great storylines though in my opinion. Maybe it was because of the fact that the episode had no commercials (thus being longer than usual) or the season just needs to get going in order to pick up the pace but I have to admit that I really wasn’t that impressed with the season two premiere.
What I really want to know is why some many shows are starting to have commercial free episodes. I personally have never liked the idea. It’s not that I like commercials (I don’t know anyone that does) but it seems like no one knows how to make a good commercial free episode (not on Showtime or HBO). In almost every circumstance the episode is dragged out way too long as if extra scenes were added to just make the episode long enough for a commercial free episode. Unless writers can finally start writing good commercial free episodes, I personally wouldn’t mind never seeing another commercial free episode ever.
Enough ranting about how slow the episode was. Let’s actually talk about the episode itself. We’ll beign with the future scenes since they are the best in my opinion. Well it seems like in 6 months Ellen is going to snap and shoot someone. Obviously we don’t see who she shoots (all the suspense would be gone after all). While the future storyline isn’t nearly as good as last season’s at this point, it still intrigues me.
As far as the present day though, I could pretty much say the exact opposite. So far this season’s big case (some shady business that is trying to hide something) isn’t really that appealing (at least at this moment). After trying to turn on his company, Daniel’s (who has some past with Patty) wife is killed. I don’t know but I don’t think this case will be that interesting.
Meanwhile Ellen is having a hard time getting over David’s death. She is in therapy but it appears that her life is slowly falling apart (maybe this leads to her shooting someone in the future). It appears that Ellen will probably also have a future love interest in one of the other members of her therapy group. At this point I don’t really care either way about the relationship.
I really don’t care about Patty’s charity especially since the only reason she created it was to try and get rid of her guilt for what happened in the previous season. I do have to bring up though with the charity is the scene on Regis and Kelly. I honestly think every show eventually uses the Regis and Kelly show sometime in their run. I honestly don’t know why every show decides to use it though.
Finally in what shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone (since he was still a regular this season), Arthur Frobischer survived last season’s shooting. All I can say about this is that he better actually have a purpose this season. At this point I think he will either be used in order to try and help bring down Patty or he might be used as a man trying to redeem himself. Both might be interesting but I will have to wait and see.
So what are your thoughts on the season premiere of Damages?
