As had been advertised for weeks, last night’s Chuck episode was presented in 3D. I was skeptical of the decision to make the episode 3D since I have always kind of thought of it as a gimmick. 3D is mostly a gimmick and forces writers to come up with ways to utilize the technology including things like throwing something at the camera. I held out hope for Chuck though since Chuck is one of the best shows on television after all. After seeing the episode in 3D, I have to say that while the technology could use some work, it surprisingly worked pretty well.

What I liked about the episode is that it used the technology but didn’t overuse it. I never really got the feeling that the show added something in, in order to make the 3D experience more interesting. This lead to the episode not always utilizing the technology but that is how it should be used in my opinion. So while I don’t think Chuck should have another 3D episode, I might welcome other shows trying out 3D for an episode as long as they don’t overuse the technology.

While I was surprised with the 3D aspect of the episode, I am disappointed with the viewer turnout. While I didn’t think the Super Bowl advertisements would have made Chuck a hit, I really thought it could have gotten more viewers for the show. By no means did Chuck do terrible, but I still think it is on the bubble to be picked up for another season.

I seriously don’t know why NBC keeps making Chuck and Heroes face the stiff competition on Monday nights. For some reason every network goes all out on Mondays. I think NBC is just being stupid not moving Chuck, Heroes and possibly Medium to Wednesdays. There is little competition on the night and I bet all three networks would have much higher ratings after the switch. Hopefully NBC’s scheduling problem won’t cost Chuck another season.

As far as the episode itself, I thought it was quite good. Does Chuck really ever have  bad episodes though? Dominic Monaghan was a good guest star. He brought life to the character even though I wonder why the only role he seems to get anymore is as a retired/washed up rocker. The plot line could have been developed a little more but it provided plenty of laughs expecially Casey’s obsession of knocking everyone out with sleeping darts. The Buy More storyline was a little hit and miss. Some of Morgan’s challenges were pretty funny but I thought the conclusion to the storyline could have been better.

So I am glad that Chuck is finally back. While Chuck Versus the Third Dimension wasn’t the best episode ever and it didn’t bring in the viewers I wished it would, I am still very satisfied with the episode. There are very few shows on television that so consistently entertain on a weekly basis as much as Chuck. Even if this is the final season of Chuck (which is a possibility) the rest of the season will definitely be a ride. Supposedly the rest of the season will be like three seasons jam packed into the rest of this season. All I can say is that I can’t wait.

Your Take: What was your thoughts on Chuck Versus the Third Dimension? Did you think the 3D was a gimick or did you enjoy the 3D effects? Do you think moving Chuck to Wednesday’s is a good idea?
