It’s time for last call at America’s favorite bar, Cheers. After 11 seasons on the television airwaves, Cheers closed down after it’s eleventh season. You can now relive the final Cheers episodes in Cheers The Final Season. In it’s final season the Cheers crew has to deal with the bar burning down. Norm gets audited and Cliff gets a promotion. Fraiser has to deal with Lilith leaving him (and also has to prepare for his own spinoff). Finally Woody runs for city council while Carla gets to see her daughter get married. Toast farewell to Cheers by enjoying the final 28 episodes of Cheers historic run.
For those of you who didn’t see my season ten review, I am actually a late comer to Cheers. I had actually not seen the first nine seasons before checking out the 10th season. The same holds true for the 11th season. It obviously doesn’t make a whole lot of sense joining the show in the final two seasons. The TV Legion received screener copies of the seasons though so I decided to check the show out. I bring this up so you can take this into consideration when you read the rest of this review.
As I have mentioned several times already, Cheers truly was a historic comedy for it’s time. It ended up lasting 11 seasons which is remarkable in itself. It also was launching point for Fraiser which ended up lasting another 11 seasons. So you can pretty much say that Cheers indirectly gave us 22 years of television. That is truly remarkable in my opinion.
With that said, I thought the eleventh season of Cheers was pretty good. It’s not the best comedy I have ever seen but it is still pretty good. Maybe I would have enjoyed the season more if I had seen the first 9 seasons. The good news though is that I was still able to enjoy the show even without seeing the first nine seasons. That really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since you typically can watch comedies out of order and still know what is going on. I would recommend to those of you who haven’t seen the show though to start from the beginning since it really couldn’t hurt.
The final season of Cheers aired in 1992 and 1993. The show has held up pretty well over a decade later. The reason the show holds up pretty well is that it doesn’t have as many time relative jokes as some other comedies. The storylines in most Cheers episodes are still relevant today so that is how they hold up so well over time.
Overall I thought the 11th season of Cheers was pretty good. I was disappointed by the DVD set’s lack of special features. Come on Paramount. It’s the final season of one of the longest running comedies of all time. Why couldn’t you have added more special features besides episodic promos (the ads for each episode)? I don’t know if there was a reunion show afterwards but if there was I don’t know why it wasn’t put on the DVD set. Otherwise they could have brought back some of the cast and had them talk about the show. There are plenty of other ideas so I don’t know why Paramount couldn’t have added at least something besides episodic promos. Maybe Paramount is waiting for the complete series DVD set (if Cheers even gets a complete series release).
So Cheers is one of the longest running comedies in American television history. The show is still pretty funny even though it aired over a decade ago. So with that said, if you like your typical sitcom you should look into picking up Cheers The Final Season (even though I would recommend you start from the beginning). For fans of Cheers I would recommend that you pick up the final season unless you are hoping for a complete series release. While it is disappointing that there weren’t more special features, fans should still final season DVD.
