It’s time to return to the little Boston Bar where everyone knows your name. Returning for it’s 10th and second to last season, The 10th season of Cheers is still filled with laughs. All your bar regulars are back for more hijinks and humor. There’s Sam and Rebecca who decide to have a child together. There’s Norm and Cliff who still spend more time in the bar than actually having a life. Fraiser and his wife Lilith continue to fight. Carla continues to be her crabby self. Finally Woody decides to get married. You can relive the 25 episodes of the 10th season in this three disc DVD set.
Cheers is one of the most famous comedies of all time. Obviously you have to be a pretty popular show if you get 11 seasons since most shows don’t even get near that amount. To top that off it also had it’s own spinoff (Fraiser) that lasted another 11 seasons. You rarely come upon a show and it’s spinoff that lasts 22 seasons. No one can challenge that Cheers was not a popular show. That doesn’t mean that the show was good though. I had actually never watched the show before I received the 10th season in the mail. Even though I had not seen the previous nine seasons I still found the 10th season of Cheers to be quite enjoyable.
I thought Cheers was an above average comedy despite being over 15 years old. That is a good sign of longevity if the show can stay relevant after so many years being off the air. Cheers succeeds in staying relevant since it really doesn’t rely on time sensitive and pop culture humor. Instead Cheers focuses more on universal type humor about everyday life. If you are worried about Cheers being outdated I wouldn’t worry since I am usually one of the biggest critics of shows being outdated and I had no problems with Cheers.
While I thought Cheers was funny there was one thing that really kept it from being a great comedy. In my opinion the 10th season really lacked laugh out loud moments. When I am judging a great comedy I look for consistency and laugh out loud moments. Cheers has the consistency but it doesn’t have the laugh out loud moments. If a comedy doesn’t have both components it can’t be a great comedy in my opinion. This is why I can’t say that Cheers is anything more than an above average comedy.
If you were wondering if you could just pick up the 10th season of the show and enjoy it without seeing the previous seasons I would have to say that you could. It probably took an episode or two to know all the characters but that is very typical of any new show you start watching. Since I had no trouble catching up with the show I can honestly tell others that haven’t watched the previous seasons that they could pick up the 10th season and still enjoy themselves. I don’t know if I would recommend it though since this is the second to last season and it would make more sense to start at the beginning of the show instead of starting near the end of the show’s run.
As you probably would have expected, Cheers Season 10 has no special features. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since most of Paramount’s older shows rarely get special features. While it would have been nice to have some special features you can’t really be upset since most of these older TV shows rarely even get a DVD set to begin with.
So I thought the 10th season of Cheers was pretty good but lacked the laugh out loud moments which would have made it a great season. If you haven’t seen the previous seasons of Cheers you could definently watch the 10th season if you want a pretty good comedy but I would recommend that you start from the beginning. Finally for fans of the show who want to relive the 10th season you can’t go wrong with picking up this dvd set. While you won’t get any special features you will be able to rewatch all the episodes of the second to last season of one of the longest running comedies of all time.
