Caroline Duffy is a cartoonist for one of the biggest Newspapers in New York. Her famous cartoon character (Caroline) is actually based on her real life. She always has enough material for her comic strip though as she tries fruitlessly to find true love in the big city. She is not alone though. There is her boyfriend, Del, who is afraid of commitment. There is her sarcastic doom and gloom employee Richard. Finally there is her best friend Annie that is always after the guy. Caroline in the City The First Season contains all 24 episodes of the first season.
Overall I was actually surprised by Caroline in the City. Looking at the cover I had the feeling that this was going to be a comedy for women. Since I am not a woman this didn’t bode well for the show. I gave the show a shot though and I was actually quite surprised. The show was much funnier than I ever thought it would be.
Despite the cover kind of making it look like a woman’s comedy I didn’t really get that feeling while watching the show. It is pretty hard to actually describe what the show is like since it doesn’t fit nicely into a comedy genre. It is kind of a mix of a workplace and friend comedy. I would compare it to something like a Seinfeld or a Friends. Neither of these are great comparisons but they are the best I could come up with.
As far as the humor is concerned I thought it was pretty funny. The show was pretty funny at points but it lacks consistency and it also lacks laugh out loud moments as well. These are the two problems that really keep it from rising to a great comedy. It is still a good comedy though. The characters are interesting and are not total rehashes like characters are in most comedies. This is mostly due to the actors and actresses who I thought were quite good in their roles.
As already mentioned this DVD set contains all 24 season one episodes. The episodes in my opinion were a little hit or miss. That can be said about most comedies though. Unless you totally hate comedies you should enjoy at least a couple and most people will probably enjoy most of them.
Like most older TV shows released on DVD (aired in 1995) you essentially get no special features on this DVD set. You only get episodic promos which are pretty much nothing. For those of you who don’t know what those are they are the commercials used to promote episodes from the show. These are kind of a throwaway special feature so I wouldn’t get to excited about them being included in the set.
Overall I found Caroline in the City to be quite entertaining. It was definitely much more than I had expected when I got the DVD set in the mail. It does have problems with consistency and laugh out loud moments and that is what keeps it from being a great comedy. Unless you really hate comedies I would recommend that you look into picking up Caroline in the City Season One.
