I don’t know if it is just me but I can’t believe how Burn Notice seems to get better every single week. When Burn Notice began I thought it was a good show but it had some problems that needed to be worked through. Two seasons later and I have to admit that Burn Notice is truly establishing itself as one of the best shows on television right now. With a great mix of humor, action, and drama; you really can’t ask for much more from Burn Notice. So despite the subtle Super Bowl references (which coincidentally appears to be occurring on all of NBC’s programming these days and is annoying me), last night’s episode of Burn Notice was a classic.

So this week’s episode centers around the gang helping out a football coach named Sean (played by Michael Irvin) who helps out impoverished kids. When one of his players (Corey) is threatened by gangsters he gets Michael and Sam to help him out by promising them football tickets. The gang is after Corey after he attacked one of their leaders after they assaulted his sister. Michael, Fiona, and Sam intimidate the gangster by posing as a rival gang that wants his turf. They begin to scare him away by attacking him in his car with a smoke grenade and storming his bar and burning it down.

Their antics get the attention of the gangster’s boss who brings Michael in for a meeting. He recruits Michael to join their gang. This allows Michael to set up the gangster when he puts out a hit on Michael. He gets the gangsters’ boss in the car when the hit goes down. They get away in time but the gangster’s boss thinks an attempt was made on his life so he has his men go after the gangster. The gangster flees Miami in order to save his life.

This week’s case was very good in my opinion. I loved Michael’s, Fiona’s and Sam’s “gang”. I seriously want to know how thye come up with some of these ideas and how they have never been shot or killed in one of them. It also makes me wonder why they have never been arrested. They have only intimidated gangsters, robbed people, and even blown up some things. Yet they still haven’t been arrested yet. Either the Miami police force in the Burn Notice universe is terrible or they are scared to arrest anyone. Even though some of the things they pull off are unrealistic, I don’t really care since they are what truly makes Burn Notice special. It has some great drama but it also has plenty of humor as well. Now I just wish the show could find a use for Michael’s mother instead of making her the designated babysiter who seems to have way too many problems with her appliances breaking all the time.

Meanwhile on the burn notice front, Michael ends up sneaking into a business in order to get the surveillance tapes to find the man that tried to kill him. In typical Michael fashion he is able to get the video just in time before the company finds out that he is not supposed to be there. Watching the security footage, Michael finds out that the man has a job with a local construction company in order to maintain his cover. While Fiona investigates the construction company (pretending to be making a calendar of construction workers), Michael meets with Carla who gives Michael help by giving him intel on likely bombers. Fiona finds the bomber amoungst the construction workers and heads to his house. Instead of waiting for backup, Fiona breaks into his house which has a trigger alarm that sets the house on fire. When Michael sees the fire he thinks Fiona is dead. When he returns home though he finds out that Fiona escaped the fire. The thought of her dying is enough to spark Michael and Fiona’s relationship.

Just like the main case of the episode, I thought this storyline was also very good. I like the pace that the show is taking with regards to who burned Michael. You can’t go too fast and you can’t go too slow. I think Burn Notice is going at the perfect pace. As far as Michael and Fiona hooking back up, I am happy about it (as long as it is more than a short term relationship). You could pretty much tell from the first episode that Michael and Fiona would hookup at least once during the series. Now we just have to wonder about how long it is going to last.

Finally I am going to finish off with a theory I have about Burn Notice. While I have absolutely no facts to back this up, I wouldn’t be shocked if Burn Notice has a new home next season. I think there is a realistic chance that NBC decides to take Burn Notice away from USA (since both networks are owned by the same company). I think there is a possibility for two reasons. First, NBC really doesn’t have much as far as shows right now. Their schedule is really struggling so they might poach Burn Notice in order to get a good show. Second, Burn Notice does really well in the 18-49 demo and it’s ratings improve almost every single week. Those are both good signs that Burn Notice could do well on network television as long as NBC is smart enough to air all the episodes of the first two seasons in the summer in order to get those caught up that don’t have cable. Burn Notice also has a great companion show in Chuck. Just think of a Burn Notice/Chuck back to back schedule. Plus if Burn Notice would fail on NBC they could just move it back to USA so failure really wouldn’t hurt NBC that much. While network shifts for shows are pretty rare, I really think moving Burn Notice to NBC is a possibility.

Quotes:

Businessman (when Michael steals the surveillance footage): “You’re breaking the law.”

Fiona (from a fortune cookie): “The one who burned you is closer than you think.”

Sam: “When is the last time you did something like normal people do?”

Michael: “Don’t be soft on me Carla.”

Fiona: “Use a golf club next time.”

Michael: “Oh, this is getting better and better.”

Madeline: “If you didn’t bring people over I would never see you.”

Michael (about Madeline’s crackers): “These are like cardboard.”

Michael: “Plus your place is on fire.”

Sam: “The temporary damage hurts like hell.”

Michael (about the henchmen he captured): “I brought you a little going away present.”

Sam: “You earned yourself another beer.”

Fiona: “You think I’ve never broken into a house before?”

Your Take: What were your thoughts on this week’s Burn Notice? Did you enjoy the case and why do you think Michael and the gang is always able to avoid the police? Do you like Michael and Fiona hooking up? Finally do you think Burn Notice could be moved to NBC and would you welcome the idea?
