I really didn’t have much as far as expectations going into this episode. I guess I never really have any expectations about Bones episodes, but nonetheless I was quite surprised by yesterday’s episode. While it was unbelievable and could have used some refinements, I thought last night’s episode was one of the best Bones episodes of the season.

The Gravedigger returns just as a new group of agents are put on the case. Booth ends up being kidnapped by the Gravedigger. The Jeffersonian gang has to help find him without FBI invovlement. While Bones wants to just cave to the demands (hand over all the evidence on the case that Hodgins stole from the FBI), Hodgins convinces the gang to try and work together to find “The Gravedigger”. When a FBI agent is killed, the team decides to just cave to The Gravedigger and they hand over the evidence but are almost blown up in the process. The FBI takes the Jeffersonians off the case but Bones won’t give up. They keep investigating until they discover that one of the FBI agents on the case is actually the Gravedigger.

Meanwhile Booth wakes up from his kidnapping. He breaks out of his cage and then starts seeing a former fellow soldier that died in combat. The soldier (either a ghost or hallucination) helps Booth escape an abandoned boat that is about to be blown up. The Jeffersonians find him in time and Booth is saved before the boat explodes. After being rescued, Booth pays his respects to the soldier and gives a message to his former girlfriend.

So what I liked about last night’s episode was that it was actually pretty emotional. We got to see some of Booth’s military past. We also got to see that Bones really cares about Booth. But most of all it was Booth interacting with the soldier that he thought he was responsible for letting die in combat. While it was kind of unbelievable (especially since the ghost/hallucination really couldn’t have helped Booth), for some reason it still worked. It gave Booth some closure regarding his military past so it will be interesting to see how that affects him in the future.

Quotes:

Soldier: “Now you’re getting competitive with a hallucination.”

Your Take: So what were your thoughts on this week’s episode? Was the ghost/hallucination storyline too much for you or did you like the closure that it gave to Booth?
