Being a nerd myself (not nearly as much as the nerds in this episode though) I was anticipating the episode. I knew the episode was going to be full of sci-fi references. While the episode wasn’t perfect I did enjoy the episode. This episode did reinforce that even though Bones is a crime drama, it is wise enough to change up locaitons and add some twists to their cases in order to make them more interesting than most of the other crime dramas on the air today.
The best part of this episode was obviously the nerd references. Some of these references were quite good but my favorite had to come from Bones assistant. He was addressing all the sci-fi shows he loved and at the end he mentioned “I even watch Fringe”. While it was obvious a plug for the show, I actually found it pretty funny since how he said it made it seem like he was ashamed to actually watch Fringe. It was like Fringe wasn’t worthy of being named along with the other shows he mentioned. While Fringe is a pretty good show, I like it when networks and shows can make fun of themselves.
While the case was good, I really did miss Booth in this episode. I don’t know why the show decided to essentially bench him this week. While Booth on painkillers lead to some laughs and wasn’t a bad storyline, I think it could have waited till another episode. I just think Booth mingling with all the nerds would have been hilarious. Booth has made fun of the gang for their nerdiness in the past. I think it would have been great to see him in a room full of nerds. While I don’t mind Agent Perotta, I think Bones really missed out on a perfect opportunity for plenty more laughs if they would have just let Booth run the case.
One other thing I have to comment on is Bones ever changing group of assistants. After Zach’s departure I don’t mind a search process but things are getting pretty ridiculous at this point. While this week’s assistant was perfect for the case, I hope the show finally gives the position some stability. I personally wish they had never gotten rid of Zach in the first place.
Your Take: What was your thoughts on this geek filled episode of Bones? Do you think the show missed out on a perfect opportunity by sitting Booth out for this week’s case? Do you wish Bones would just decide finally on a new assistant for Bones?
