I don’t know if ABC could have planned things any better. When they first began developing Better Off Ted I am guessing they never imagined how Better Off Ted couldn’t have launched at a better time. With all the financial troubles and corrupt companies littering the news, Better Off Ted is as current as any comedy can hope to be. It’s too bad that Better Off Ted doesn’t do a better job with the opportunity.
Better Off Ted follows a man named Ted as he tries to bring some ethics to a company that is seriously lacking it. From freezing employees to weaponizing fruits and vegetables, the company is willing to do anything in order to make a buck. Ted must face off against his boss Verónica (Portia de Rossi, Arrested Development) who is one of the ringleaders for the unethical behavior. Ted is also joined by the geeky scientists Lem and Phil, and the marketing/research director Linda (who Ted has a crush on).
The plot sounds a little serious for a comedy but don’t let that fool you. Better Off Ted is definitely a comedy. Not a great comedy but still a solid comedy. I would compare it to Scrubs and Andy Richter Controls the Universe. The humor is pretty similar even though it lacks the dream sequences which were the best parts of both series.
Having seen two episodes of the series I have to say that the show has it’s moments but it also misses on quite a few jokes. Sometimes you will laugh and other times you will think that the latest joke was so lame and stupid. Better Off Ted could really work on it’s consistency. I am willing to give Better Off Ted a third episode to impress me but I think the show needs to step it up.
Since humor is a very subjective thing, I really can’t give much of a recommendation. Some people will probably really enjoy it while others will hate it. The best I can do for a recommendation is that if you are interested in a new comedy you should check out Better Off Ted tonight on ABC at 8:30/7:30 C. If you don’t find the show to be funny you can always stop watching. If you do enjoy it though you could have a new comedy that will give you laughs each week.
