Almost two years ago, Army Wives premiered on Lifetime. I never really gave the show a chance since it was on Lifetime after all (being a male Lifetime generally doesn’t appeal to me). Getting the first season on DVD I was surprised that it far exceeded my expectations and was actually a pretty good show. Now the second season is out on DVD and I would encourage people that enjoy character dramas to give the show a chance.

For those of you who have never seen Army Wives before, Army Wives is a character driven drama that follows life in the military for soldiers as well as their families. Season two continues where season one left off. This season the tribe of army wives deal with a new set of challenges. From tragedy, to relationship troubles, and life changing events; the army wives truly need each other this season to get through the daily challenges of life.

Like many character dramas Army Wives’ focus on the characters. Since there is a focus on characters, the characters need to be interesting or the show will suffer. While I don’t think Army Wives has the best characters on television, I think they hold their own very well.

As far as comparing the first and second season I would have to say I enjoyed the first season more. I don’t know why exactly but I thought the second season dragged at times. Maybe it was because there were six more episodes in season two than season one. The second season is not bad though. If you enjoyed the first season I can’t imagine that you won’t enjoy the second season. If you have never seen Army Wives before and like character dramas I would recommend checking it out.

As far as special features Army Wives provides quite a few features for fans of the show. I wouldn’t consider any of them to be great special features since none of them are must sees. They are worth watching though if you are a big fan of the series. The special features include:

  • Active Duty: The Cast of Army Wives at Ford Bragg-Around a 20 minute look at the cast visiting Fort Bragg. See what goes on at a real US military base and meet some real Army Wives.
  • Operational Intelligence: Getting the Army’s Support-A fifteen to twenty minute look at how the show gets inspiration from the Army in order to make the show more authentic.
  • The Tribe-A ten to fifteen minute look at the cast and the storylines each encountered in season two.
  • Army Wives Gives Back-Little segments where Army Wives and the cast give back to deserving Army Wives.
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Bloopers

If you like character dramas I imagine that you will like Army Wives. If you have never seen the series before I recommend picking up the first season. If you enjoy the first season I would recommend picking up the second season. If you have already seen the second season I would base a purchase decision on how much you would like to rewatch the season two episodes. The special features aren’t bad but I don’t believe they are worthy of a purchase unless you were planning on rewatching the episodes anyway.
