America’s Got Talent Semi-Finals Audition #1 (September 1st, 2009)

The finals are quickly approaching on America’s Got Talent. Overall this night had quite a bit of talent. That was probably because essentially all the unique acts performed tonight. One act showed why it’s the best act since Terry Fator while another act showed why it is easily the most overrated act in the competition this season. Acrodunk (Basketball Act): Acrodunk is my favorite act in the competition at this point. I have to say that the earlier part of the performance was a little weak for Acrodunk but the ending was fantastic. They totally deserve to move onto the finals and win the competition. It is hard for the variety/unique acts to bring something new to the table every week but that is exactly what Acrodunk does every single performance. They are the best act America’s Got Talent has had since Terry Fator won season two of America’s Got Talent. I have a bad feeling that they aren’t going to be given another chance since with only four acts making the next round it will be hard to make the finals with acts such as Kevin Skinner, and Voices of Glory almost being guaranteed a spot in the finals. I know my vote is going to Acrodunk. Talent: A  Entertainment: A+

Texas Tenors (Singing Group): I didn’t think they deserved to make this round so I am not surprised that I definitely don’t think they deserve to make the next round. Only so many singers deserve to make the next round and they aren’t one of the best. The Voices of Glory are considerably better and even though I think Kevin Skinner is worse I don’t think he has a chance of not making the next round. With only four acts moving on I really can’t see three singing acts moving on and since I think they will get the third most votes, I don’t expect them to make the next round and I hope they don’t.  Talent: B-  Entertainment: B-

Paradizo Dance (Dance Group): I am glad that they made it to this round but I think there is a slim chance that they make the next round. Spots in the finale are slim and I think only one dancing group will make the next round tonight. I wish they could make the next round since they were the most unique dancing group tonight. I personally liked their performance this week and I think they are one of the better acts left in the competition. Talent: A-  Entertainment: A-

Drew Thomas Magic (Magic Act): His performance this week cheesy and wasn’t his best in my opinion. The last performance was much better. I don’t know what is with magicians and America’s Got Talent. Every magician has to have a bad week which ends their time in the competition. I think this is going to be Drew Thomas last performance on America’s Got Talent. I personally think he should still move onto the next round based purely on his potential and the fact that he is actually a non singing or dancing act. He is my second favorite non singing and dancing act but since I only think one unique act will move on this week I would rather have Acrodunk move through to the next round. I would be really glad if both make the next round. Talent: B+  Entertainment: A-

Tony Hoard and Rory (Dog Act): I honestly didn’t think they should have made this round. There are quite a few dog frisbee acts and in order for them to be worthy of making the finals they needed to show that they are easily the best dog frisbee act in the country. They didn’t show that last week.  They were way better this week than last week but I still don’t think they are noticeably the best dog frisbee act in the country. If all unique acts could move onto the next round this week I would have no problem moving them through to the next round but since at least two spots will be taken up by singers and dancers I would rather see Acrodunk and Drew Thomas Magic in the next round. Talent: B+   Entertainment: B

The Voices of Glory (Singing Trio): Overall I would be shocked if they don’t end up making the next round. The competition is tough but they have three things going for them. First they are the second youngest group to perform this week. Second they have a touching story which always helps in getting votes. Finally they are a pretty talented group. The sister is easily the strongest singers while the brothers are pretty solid overall.  I personally won’t vote for them since I will not vote for any singers this season since I want a unique act to finally win this competition. I doubt a non singer will win the competition but I am holding out hope. Talent: B+  Entertainment: B

The Fab Five (Tap Dance/Clogging): Overall I thought their performance was pretty good. Not really any better or worse than the other performances. I think they will have a hard time making the next round though. There are six dancing acts in the top 20 and there are only 8 spots in the finals. At max I see two or three of the dancing acts moving onto the next round. It is going to be hard for The Fab Five to be one of those top 2 or 3. If they make the finals it will be instead of Paradizo Dance and Arcadian Broad.  Talent: B+  Entertainment: B+

Grandma Lee (Comic): Well you have to give her credit for pursuing her dream so late in life. While some people find her funny, I really didn’t find this week’s performance to be that funny. She just is not my style of comic. Comedy is such a subjective thing. I didn’t like her but there are probably plenty of people that did. We will see how many people her humor touches since her work is cut out for her to make the next round.  Talent: B  Entertainment: B

Arcadian Broad (Dancer): I got to say that doing “High School Musical” was extremely cheesy in my opinion. I personally thought the first two performances were better. Just as with The Fab Five I think he is going to have a hard time making the next round just based on the amount of dancers left in the competition. He is talented but only so many dancers can make the next round. There are several singers that are guarantees to make the next round and I bet at least one of the spots will go to a variety/unique act. That leaves one spot this week for the possibility of a dancing act moving on to the next round. Unless the dancers can somehow pull the upset and eliminate either Voices of Glory or Kevin Skinner.One thing I did think was worth mentioning was when Arcadian Broad brought up that he was essentially persuaded into doing “High School Musical”. If that was the case I am extremely disappointed in NBC. The acts should be able to choose for themselves what they would like to perform.  Talent: B+  Entertainment: B+

Kevin Skinner (Country Singer): Maybe it is just me but I think Kevin Skinner is highly overrated. I am even a country music fan and I don’t think he is that great of singer. He seems to have the ability to take a decent country song and turn it into one of the most boring country songs on the planet. If that is a talent people are looking for than he should win the competition. If it is based on his singing he shouldn’t make the next round. I personally think his story about being a “chicken catcher” is clouding people’s opinions a little too much. Maybe I am tone deaf but once again I don’t know what people see in him. I think this is the classic case of a contestants story making an act get more votes than they deserve. I guarantee that he is going to move onto the next round which is such a disappointment since I thought he was the worst act of the night. Talent: C  Entertainment: C
