Well the quarterfinal auditions are over. Just like most of the previous season, it appears that this year will once again be the year of singers. There has essentially not been a non singing winner yet. Terry Fator was a ventriloquist but also a singer. This year there are four singers in this competition that I think will be very hard to beat; Kevin Skinner, Barbara Padilla, The Voices of Glory, and Lawrence Beaman. At this point I would be surprised if one of them didn’t win the competition. I personally would vote for Acrodunk but I already know they have next to no chance at winning.
Along with the singing acts are the dancing acts. This year there are a lot of dancing acts that have made the next round. Like usual the variety/anything but singing or dancing acts are once again not well represented. I honestly don’t know how it is so hard for the judges to find truly unique acts. There are hundreds of talents and yet they can only find a couple each season that deserve to be shown off to America. I find that hard to believe.
As far as this week it was a pretty solid episode. There were quite a few acts that I enjoyed but I don’t think have much chance of making the next round. After the break check out my thoughts on tonight’s performances.
Ishaara (Bollywood Dance Group)-I personally thought their first performance was much better. It was more upbeat and just more entertaining in my opinion. There are so many dancing acts in the competition this year that I think Ishaara could have a tough time winning the competition. If it was a previous season I don’t think they would have much trouble making it to at least the next round and probably to the finals. With so many dancers this season though I think they are going to have their work cut out for them. I am guessing the recent fascination with Bollywood and Slumdog Millionaire will help them make it to the next round. Their work is cut out for them after that though. Talent: B Entertainment: B
Barbara Padilla (Opera Singer)-I honestly would be shocked if she doesn’t make the next round. She has a great voice and she also has a story that many of the acts are missing in this episode. Those two things will make it almost impossible for her to not make it to the next round. The problem is that I don’t like opera at all. She is talented but since I don’t like opera I didn’t find her to be very entertaining. Talent and Entertainment are the two things that I feel need to be judged in every act. She grades high on one and low on the other. Talent: A- Entertainment: B-
Pam Martin’s Top Dogs (Dog Act)-With one dog act already in the next round I think there isn’t a great chance for Pam Martin’s Top Dogs to make the next round. If America saw her act before putting the other dog act through to the next round I think quite a few people would have changed their minds about the other dog act. I personally thought her dog act was considerably better than the other dog act. It’s too bad that I don’t think she has much shot at making the next round after the other dog act made the next round. I don’t think America will put two dog acts into the top 20. If she does make the next round I hope she ends up using several of her dogs at the same time since it appears that she has several trained dogs. She is going to have to bring all shes got since the competition is pretty fierce this season. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+
African High Flyers (Acrobat Act)-This act really only got a little time in the audition round. While I think their act had a couple slow points, I think they deserve to move onto the next round. Since we weren’t able to see much of their first performance I really can’t comment on the judges thought that their act didn’t improve much over the first round. I need to judge what I saw and I saw a very entertaining acrobat act that deserves to move onto the next round. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+
Mia Boostrom (Singer)-With this year’s crop of singers, I think it might be pretty hard for Mia to win the competition. I think she has a pretty good chance of making it to the next round but I don’t think she is going to win the whole competition. First I think Barbara Padilla is going to get most of the singing votes. Her chances of making the next round comes down to how many people vote for singers this week. I think either Mia or the Eriam Sisters will make the next round while the other doesn’t make the next round. We will have to see which one it is. My random guess puts the Eriam Sisters into the semifinals while Mia misses out once again. Talent: B Entertainment: B-
Erik and Rickie (Young Ballroom Dancers)-For their age they are very good dancers. I don’t know if their first or second performance was better. Unlike most children acts, they are quite talented. I don’t think they could really run a show in Vegas though just like most of the other child acts on this show. They deserve to move on and I think they have a very good shot at getting enough votes to make the next round. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+
Coney Island Chris (Variety Act)-I am actually surprised that such a wierd act made it into the quarterfinals. I think he honestly might be the weirdest act ever to make it this far in the competition. Its too bad that the act wasn’t very good. While I like weird acts, his act wasn’t very entertaining or involved much talent. Two negatives in my opinion. Talent: C Entertainment: C
Matt and Anthony (Tap Dancer and Guitar Player)-I got to say that their combination of tap dancing and guitar playing doesn’t really work. The tap dancer is very good but the act just doesn’t really work in my opinion. Tap dancing and guitar playing don’t really go that well together especially in a competition for $1 million. I don’t think their act could run their own show either. Their act is far from bad but I agree with Sharon that something is just missing from their act. Talent: B Entertainment: B
The Lollipop Girls (Burlesque Dancers)-This is one of the wildcard acts given a second chance. I think America’s Got Talent has to put through one of these type of acts every single year. I could see this as a Vegas act for pretty obvious reasons. I really don’t think they have much of a chance in this competition though since none of these types of acts have done well in the past. I don’t think things are going to change this year either. Talent: C Entertainment: B-
Drew Stevyns (Singer)-He is the second wildcard act of the night. Since his audition wasn’t shown in the audition stages there is really nothing to compare tonight’s performance to. I personally like his type of music but as Piers brought up he is not as good of singer as others in the competition. There is way too many singers in this competition and I don’t think his singing can hold up against the competition. Talent: B Entertainment: B-
Recycled Percussion (Band)-When I see this act my mind goes straight to the group Stomp. When the performance began I didn’t think much of their act. It wasn’t that entertaining. Then a little before the halfway point, their act turned a corner. By the end of the act, I thought they did quite well. I don’t know if they can win the competition but I think they deserve to make it to the next round. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+
The EriAm Sisters (Singing Trio)-I honestly thought their audition was better. I really think they are on par with most of the rest of the singers in the quarterfinals. Not really any better but not any worse. There is a tough competition for singers this year. As I mentioned already, I think their fate depends on whether America likes them or Mia more. I think one moves on while the other goes home. Talent: B Entertainment: B
