America’s Got Talent Quarterfinals Show #5 (August 18th, 2009)

americasgottalent Americas Got Talent Quarterfinals Show #5 (August 18th, 2009)

After two disappointing audition episodes to start off the quarterfinals, I have to say that yesterday’s performances as a whole didn’t disappoint. While Acrodunk remains the best performance of the competition, this audition episode is the first show of the quarterfinals that actually had over five acts that deserved to move onto the semi-finals. Let’s get into what this episode had to offer.

FootworKINGZ (Dance Group)-Overall their performance was very good. I am not a huge fan of dancing acts but they already look like a Vegas act. I personally loved the costumes since they brought something unique to the performance. I really would be shocked if they don’t move onto the next round. Talent: A- Entertainment: B

Marcus Terell & The Serenades (Singers)-Well his backup singers are better than his friends he had during the audition stage. I really don’t think he is any better than the other singers that have moved on at this point though. There are a lot of very strong singers this season so he still has a lot of work to do to win the entire competition. Talent: B Entertainment: B

Pixie Mystére (Young Dancers)-I don’t remember for sure but I don’t believe their full performance was shown in the audition stages. Overall I thought their act was pretty good. I think the acrobat portions were better than the more traditional dancing. I was actually a little surprised by their performance since most young acts move through only based on their age. Pixie Mystere still has quite a bit of talent despite their age. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+

Jay Mattioli (Magician)-He was the first wild card act of the night. I personally think he should have been selected for the quarterfinals without having to be a wild card. I was disappointed by his performance this week but I still thought the judges were way too harsh on him. Some of his tricks were simplistic but I would give his act another chance since most magicians have their off performances. This could possibly have been his off performance. I also totally agree with what he said at the end that he has to keep coming up with new material while singers don’t have to change up their act. This is why I think in future seasons singers should be forced to perform their own songs (that they wrote) after the first audition round. Talent: B Entertainment: B

BRI (Singer)-She is either not that good of singer, or I don’t like her singing style. She just wasn’t that good in my opinion. Other people might like her performance but I didn’t like it at all. Maybe it is just her style but I don’t think she deserves to move onto the next round. There are much, much better singers left in the competition. Talent: C+ Entertainment: C+

U4RIA Dance Crew (Dance Group)-This is the second wild card act of the night.  I thought the FootworKINGZ were much better. They weren’t bad but I think only one dance group in each episode should move on and I would pick the FootworKINGZ. Talent: B- Entertainment: B-

Dave Johnson (Humor Singer)-Dave Johnson is unlike most singers, a unique act. He doesn’t have the singing ability of the other acts but he at least can create his own songs. His first performance was better, but I thought it was ridiculous that he got three x’s. Only downright terrible acts deserve three x’s. While he didn’t have the greatest performance I would still consider voting for him based on his creativity.  I like creativity in acts which is severely missing from way too many acts this season. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B

Hairo Torres (Contortionist Dancer)-While he isn’t a dance group like most of the other dancers, I think he compares quite well with the rest of the singers. I agree that it is going to be hard having his own show (being a single dancer) but Arcadian Broad faces the same problem. He is also a unique dancer which is always a positive in my opinion. I think he deserves to move onto the next round. He is entertaining and unique. Something this show is seriously missing. Talent: A- Entertainment: A-

G-Force (Young Girl Rock Group)-In the audition round we didn’t get to see much of their act. Unless I am tone deaf, they just aren’t that good of singers. Their act is not worth a million dollars. Their guitar and drum playing wasn’t bad but their singing is not worthy of moving on. I totally agree with Piers with x’ing them. I sure hope they aren’t moved onto the next round. Talent: C- Entertainment: C-

Jeffery Ou (Piano Player)- The first portion of the act showed that he was a great piano player. It’s too bad that the audio equipment malfunctioned in the second half of his performance. I really don’t think Jeffery has much of a chance to make the next round just because he was piano player and I don’t think that would interest many people. I think America should give him another chance though since it wasn’t his fault the audio equipment failed. Combine that with his great piano playing in the first half of the competition and I think he deserves to make it to the next round. Talent: B+ Entertainment: B+

Mario and Jenny (Variety/Danger Act)-Their act is very strange and a little creepy but their act was entertaining. They definitely are a danger act. I could also see them as a Vegas act. Most fire acts are pretty boring overall but their act was quite entertaining. If you wanted to base this show on acts that were most ready for a show in Vegas, Mario and Jenny would be near the top. Talent: B Entertainment: A-

Lawrence Beaman (Singer)-It is quite obvious that he is one of or possibly the best singer in the competition. He doesn’t really sing my type of music but you can’t deny that the man is talented. I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn’t make the next round of the competition. Talent: A- Entertainment: B

My rankings of the performances are as follows:

  1. Hairo Torres
  2. Mario and Jenny
  3. FootworKINGZ
  4. Lawrence Beaman
  5. Pixie Mystére
  6. Jeffery Ou
  7. Dave Johnson
  8. Jay Mattioli
  9. Marcus Terell & The Serenades
  10. U4RIA Dance Crew
  11. BRI
  12. G-Force
