Today ABC revealed their 2009-2010 television schedule to the world.  ABC  held their annual up front presentation for television critics and advertisers. We at the TV Legion weren’t able to make the trip to see the presentation but we were given the opportunity to see it screened live over the internet. I won’t get into the marketing mumbo jumbo since none of you really care but I do have some news on ABC’s newest shows. If my early thoughts are any indication, television fans are in for a treat with ABC’s latest shows. The TV Legion will try to keep you up to date on any information on the new ABC series but right now I am able to give you my opinions on all the new series.

Fall 2009

Flash Forward (Pictured Above): If the upfront presentation was any indication, this will be ABC’s flagship new show this season. This show was actually my most anticipated show going into the presentation. I thought this show could be Lost’s eventual replacement. Well after being able to see the first act (the first 5-10 minutes) I have to say that Flash Forward has the makings of a great series.

While the first 10 minutes wasn’t mind blowing, I can tell that the series has the makings to be great show. The series has action as well as interesting character development. Also add in the sci-fi element that everyone blacked out for two minutes and had visions of the future. As long as Flash Forward lives up to its potential I think it will be a great series. Hopefully I will be able to soon see the entire pilot and be able to confirm that Flash Forward lives up to its potential.

First Impression: While I wasn’t blown away by the first act, Flash Forward has the makings of a great series.

Modern Family: I have to admit that I didn’t have very high expectations of Modern Family. I thought at best it would be a very average comedy. Boy was I wrong.

I was actually able to see the entire pilot and I have to say that if the pilot is any indication, Modern Family will be the next big comedy hit (as long as people actually watch it and it isn’t canceled right away).

I can honestly say that I found almost the entire episode of Modern Family to be hilarious. The crowd reaction at the event seemed to confirm my thoughts.

Early indications are definitely bright for this series. As long as the series can keep up with the pilot, this will be a great comedy. I know one thing for sure; Modern Family will definitely be on my must watch list of new shows for 2009.

First Impression: If the pilot is any indication, Modern Family is currently the show to beat for best new show of Fall 2009. Lets hope subsequent episodes are just as good.

Eastwick: The final big series premiering this fall is Eastwick. What do you get when you combine Desperate Housewives with sci-fi and magic? Eastwick seems like a pretty good guess.

While I was only able to see a teaser trailer, I think Eastwick has the potential to be a pretty good series. The preview had a couple of laughs and the series in general seems to have a Desperate Housewives type feel (except that the main characters in Eastwick have magical powers).

At this point Eastwick is more of a wait and see type of show. I will definitely be checking out the pilot and my judgement of the show will be based off that.

First Impression: From the preview the show appears to have the makings of a pretty good series. Now the question is whether it will live up to expectations.

Hank: Kelsey Grammar returns to television once again. This time he is a bigshot CEO that was recently fired and ends up having to move back to his hometown along with his family.

With the short preview that was given, I think Hank has potential. While it is not nearly as funny as Modern Family (at least at this point), I think the series is average at this point but could take the next step. If you like more traditional comedies I think Hank might be right up your alley.

First Impression: Promising but could use some work.

The Middle: Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn star in The Middle. I was only able to see a preview of the show. The series has its laughs and at this point is probably the second best of ABC’s new comedies. While I have never seen Malcolm in the Middle, this series for some reason gives me the same vibe.

If you are a fan of family comedies I think you should enjoy The Middle. At this point I am going to wait until I see the full pilot before I make a judgment either way. The show has potential but I can’t tell which way the series will end up going.

First Impression: The Middle seems like your typical family comedy. There is nothing wrong with that but I am hoping that it will be original.

Cougar Town: Being a 21 year old male, I can’t say I am really in the demographic for this series. So take that in mind when reading my thoughts.

After a short preview, I really don’t think Cougar Town is going to be anything more than an average comedy. There were some laughs in the preview but I don’t think the series will hold my interest for long.

Cougar Town does appear to appeal more towards women so I am guessing more women will enjoy it then men.

First Impression: Could be good but I am not holding out much hope. Could be pretty entertaining for women though.

The Forgotten: You know the crime drama genre has gotten way oversaturated when a show is made about amateur detectives that try to solve the murders of unidentified victims.

I definently wouldn’t consider myself a big fan of the crime drama genre. As a matter of fact the only crime dramas I really enjoy tend to mix some humor in with the typical weekly case.

If the preview of The Forgotten is any indication, I don’t think I will continue to watch past the pilot. Unless the Forgotten ends up bringing something new wot the table, I think it will end up in the pile with the rest of the crime dramas.

First Impression: Looks like a typical crime drama.

Shark Tank: This will definitely be brief since little is known about this series and I wasn’t able to see a preview. Shark Tank is created by Mark Burnett so that is a positive.

Being a businessman myself, I think the series will definitely be interesting. Entrepreneurs try to get five millionaires to invest in their product/business.

The series kind of reminds me of the inventor show that was on ABC a couple summers ago. Hopefully this series will be more successful.

First Impression: Is promising but have yet to see a preview so I have no real opinion at this point.

Fall Replacement/Spring 2010

V: This being its third imagining, I have pretty high expectations of V. Not having seen the first two versions of the series, I am still excited about this series. The preview I was able to see also confirmed those feelings. I think V will be a very good series. I think V or Flash Forward could be the sci-fi series that replaces Lost as the best sci-fi show on television after next season.

The problem with V is the fact that it is a sci-fi show. If the past is any indication, sci-fi doesn’t typically do well on national television. Hopefully V is different since I have really high hopes for the series.

First Impression: I think V will be a good to great series. Now will American audiences actually watch the series?

Happy Town: The preview of Happy Town reminded me quite a bit of Harper’s Island. I am actually a fan of Harper’s Island though so that is far from a bad thing.

Where Happy Town differs from Harper’s Island is that it appears to be more of a mystery than a thriller/slasher show. I will say the preview definitely got me interested about the series.

First Impression: I think Happy Town will be an interesting and entertaining mystery series. The question is whether more people will watch Happy Town than watched/watching Harper’s Island.

The Deep End: The final series that ABC has for sure picked up is The Deep End. The preview pretty much told me everything I need to know. The Deep End appears to be your typical legal drama. The Deep End’s saving grace could be humor but the preview didn’t contain much so I am not getting my hopes up.

If your a fan of legal dramas you might like The Deep End. I personally don’t think I will end up giving it more than one episode.

First Impression: Deep End looks like a pretty boring legal drama. Maybe the pilot will surprise me but I am not holding out much hope.
