If you read my article 10 Shows that Need a Jumpstart in 2009, you probably saw that I thought Gossip Girl needed to step it up in the second half of this season. While the season has been far from bad, Gossip Girl really hasn’t stood out in any way so far this season. Something has just been missing from this season that was present in the first season. I can’t really put my hand on it but I know something is missing. With that said I thought tonight’s episode of Gossip Girl was pretty good even though there were some things I really didn’t like.

First we’ll begin with the good since I am an optimist after all. I think this week’s episode showed why Ed Westwick (Chuck) is the best actor on the show. In this episode Chuck’s slide continues as he still can’t get over his father’s death. After spending a month in Hong Kong and being dragged home by his uncle (who is a little too young to be Chuck’s uncle), Chuck proceeds to do drugs while at school. I don’t think there is a better way to get kicked out of school. Chuck continued to get worse until Blair was finally able to get him to step down off a ledge which Chuck appeared to be thinking about jumping off. While I couldn’t say that Chuck is a good person or even a person I would ever want to hang out with, you have to admit that he is an interesting character and I think it is great that Gossip Girl is exploring his character a lot more recently.

We’ll continue the positive with Jenny’s storyline. First of all I think it is a good idea that they put Jenny back in school even though I have no idea how she was allowed back in after her departure earlier in the year. I just think there are more opportunities for her character in school than when she was out in the world of fashion. Hopefully they continue her crusade to take down the “popular girls” since I think it could be an interesting storyline for a couple more weeks.

One final thing that I have to say that I am pleased with is that they made Rufus and Lily’s “love child” a male instead of a female. Obviously the character is going to show up sooner rather than later and I think the show has enough females already on it and I think the long lost sibling would have just ended up like the rest of the females on the show. I think there is more long term potential with the character being a male than there would have been with another female. I think the show will also do a better job creating a more original character with the character being a male since in my opinion most of the females on the show are quite similar in many ways.

Finally I have to address something that is driving me nuts about Gossip Girl. I am getting sick of the whole Serena, Dan, Rufus, Lily “love triangle”. Why can’t this show seriously decide what they want to do with these four characters. First Dan and Serena are together. Then they break up and Rufus and Lily are together. When Dan and Serena get back together again, Lily and Rufus “break up” again. Then Dan and Serena break up again. Then Lily and Rufus. Finally Dan and Serena are back together again. In the first season I really liked their relationship but at this point I am kind of ho-hum about it. The show needs to really decide what they want to do with their relationship and stick with it. Either keep them together or keep them broken up. I am sick and tired of them breaking up and then getting back together a couple weeks later.

So while this week’s episode wasn’t great, I have to say that it was a step in the right direction. I like how the show is developing Chuck’s character and I like that Jenny is back in school. As long as the show can finally decide what they actually want to do with Dan and Serena the show can really get back on track. Hopefully Gossip Girl can build on tonight’s episode and the show could end the season on a bright spot.

Quotes:

Gossip Girl: “Where in the world is Chuck Bass?”

Dan: “Because I’m not a third grader anymore.”

Blair: “What are you doing? You should be passed out.”

Jenny: “Dan Serena, Dan Serena, Whoa.”

Blair: “Aren’t you a little old to be here?”

So what are your thoughts on tonight’s episode? Did you enjoy the episode? Was it a disappointment? Do you think the show is on the right track? Feel free to express your opinion in the comments section.
