Missed Last Night’s Episode: ABC.com
As evidenced by my shows that needed a jumpstart article, I thought Brothers and Sisters was going down the wrong path and really needed to turn things around the second half of the season. I actually wrote that article over the weekend before I was actually able to see last night’s episode. Well it appears that Brothers and Sisters might have heeded my advice since while the show still has some work to do, it appears to be going in the right direction towards a good ending for the season.
While it might have been a little early to say the show has for sure turned the corner, I thought last night’s episode was very good and probably one of the best episode of the season so far. Several stories were also introduced in the episode that should be interesting at least for a couple episodes. So let’s go over last night’s storylines and what I liked about most of them.
We’ll begin with Kevin since his storyline was the biggest after all. While recovering from the surgery, Kevin stays at Nora’s. This upsets Scotty since Nora thinks he can’t take care of Kevin and she ends up doing everything herself as if Kevin were still a child. This leads Kevin to decide to run for it with Jusitn helping him escape to a nearby hotel. This whole sequence was hilarious especially with lines like “Why is there a trumpet in here?” (Nora) and Scotty rushing into the room yelling “Kevin escaped”.
This wasn’t all for Kevin though. He occassionally fell asleep and he started dreaming about Elizabeth in some very wacky dream sequences including one where Kevin was actually pregnant. These were all quite funny. I was also happy to see that the Julia/Kevin kiss that was seen in the previews was actually only in a dream since I think that possible storyline would have just been stupid. Finally I like that the episode pointed towards Kevin and Scotty starting to think about starting a family. Who knows this might happen earlier than expected if some of the rumors about Tommy end up coming true (I won’t spoil anything for those who haven’t heard the rumor about Balthazar Getty).
After Kevin’s big storylines, Justin also got a smaller role in today’s episode. After being embarrased in front of Cooper’s class, Justin finally decides that it is time to move on with his life. It is about time. It has only been three and a half seasons. I like that Justin is moving forward trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Maybe it will give him a storyline that doesn’t focus on his military or drug past for a change. Characters need to grow and it’s about time that Brothers and Sisters is giving Justin the opportunity to grow as a character.
There were two final storylines to touch on. First Kitty tried to continue to work on Robert’s campaign while also trying to promote her book. Obviously it didn’t work out and Kitty decides to just continue with her book. In my opinion this storyline provided some laughs but was far form anything special. Finally Nora was reunited with a man named Rodger who she hadn’t seen for 30 years. I don’t know if it is just me but this storyline got me thinking that the show is going to give Nora a love interest soon (if not Roger himself). I think it is about time that Nora move on especially since William cheated on her in the first place.
So while it wasn’t a perfect episode, I thought last night’s episode was a good stepping stone to a better second half for the third season of Brothers and Sisters.
