Show Name: Superstars of Dance
When and Where Does It Air?: Mondays from 8/7c-10/9c on NBC (premieres Sunday, January 4, 2009)
What’s It About?: “Superstars of Dance” is an international dance competition that comes from “American Idol” masterminds Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller. In the series, masters of various dance genres from eight countries will compete against each other.
Who’s In It?:
- Michael Flatley as Host
Who’s Behind It?:
- Nigel Lythgoe (”American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”)-Executive Producer
- Simon Fuller (”American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”)-Executive Producer
Why Should I Watch It?:
- Lythgoe and Fuller have been the minds behind two of the most successful reality shows of all time (”American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance”). They’ve had a few misses but overall their track record is very good.
Why Should I Skip It?:
- There are already far too many dance competitions on TV. Between “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” I’m sure there is nothing new that can be done with the genre. In addition, I’m guessing the audience for dance shows has already been tapped and I’m guessing the show will be yet another NBC reality flop.
- Other than “The Apprentice” and “America’s Got Talent,” NBC has had little success with reality shows. Most of them are awful and instantly tank in the ratings. More than likely, “Superstars of Dance” will be yet another miss for the network.
Conclusion: I’ve never been a fan of dance so I don’t see myself watching even the first episode of the series. Ratings success is definitely possible (both dance shows on the air right now are hits) but I’m guessing the genre doesn’t have room for yet another hit.
