Before receiving this compilation disc of “Dr. Katz,” I had heard of but never seen the show. After watching it, I can only say that the show is somewhat funny. It definitely can’t compare to most of the primetime cartoons I’ve watched but fans of Comedy Central programming should still enjoy it.
Dr. Katz is a therapist who helps his patients (many of whom are celebrities) with their problems while also handling his own. The other main characters are sarcastic receptionist Laura and Katz’s son Ben who is grown up but still aimless. This disc focuses exclusively on the celebrity guest voices the show had including Dave Attell, David Duchovny, Dave Chappelle, Denis Leary, Conan O’Brien, Ray Romano, Sarah Silverman, and a whole lot more.
Obviously the main draw of a show like this is its humor. Unfortunately, “Dr. Katz” isn’t all that funny. I laughed a few times during each segment but the show was definitely lacking in the laugh-out-loud category. The biggest downside, however, is the horrible “squigglevision” the show uses. The animation is bad to begin with (understandable since the show ran while Comedy Central was still growing) but the infamous squiggling outlines are even worse. I understand that the show had to use an inexpensive form of animation but I would have even preferred black and white to squigglevision.
Along with 110 minutes of the actual show, a few bonus features were added but they really aren’t much. Since I never watched the show before, I don’t know if the four “Dr. Katz Remembers” features are new animated pieces or if they were taken from the show. They are hardly worth mentioning anyway. The Comedy Central Quickies show up on just about every Comedy Central DVD release and are just short segments from some of their shows.
While I personally didn’t think this show was all that good, the compilation disc is still probably a good investment if you are even remotely interested in the concept. That way you can see if you like the show before you invest over $80 in the complete series set (the only way to get all six seasons of the show).
