“Kenny vs. Spenny” is a Canadian series that once aired on the very incompatible GSN but now runs on the much more fitting Comedy Central. In the series, best friends Kenny Holtz and Spencer Rice engage in various competitions to see who is better. Challenges in this volume include “who can blow the biggest fart?” “who can be tied to a goat the longest?,” and “who can handle more torture?” Each week’s winner is rewarded while the loser is humiliated.
Despite being a comedy series, I didn’t really find “Kenny vs. Spenny” to be that funny. This is probably because I don’t really like the “Jackass” like comedy the series is known for. I don’t think people purposely hurting or humiliating themselves is funny. Another problem is that obviously neither Kenny or Spenny are very likable. Kenny always finds a way to cheat in these games and makes way too many gay jokes about Spenny. Both the cheating and gay jokes are supposed to be funny but they really aren’t. Spenny isn’t as bad but he often comes off as a bit of a whiner.
Neither video or audio quality is great but both are passable. Since the video or audio isn’t that important in a series like this, it isn’t that big of a deal. Extras include two audio commentaries, a bonus competition, an average featurette, and some deleted scenes. I didn’t find any of these to be particularly interesting but I’m sure fans of the series will enjoy all of the extras.
Overall I didn’t really enjoy “Kenny vs. Spenny” at all. I didn’t find the series funny and I think I lost several brain cells just by watching the show. However, as I noted above I am not a fan of this kind of humor. I’m sure if you like shows like “Jackass,” “Hurl!,” and “South Park” you’ll enjoy “Kenny vs. Spenny.” I just can’t recommend the series to anyone else.
